Useful information about nbn installation appointments

To set you up with Belong on the nbn, your address needs to be in a nbn ready area.

Depending on how you connect to the nbn (the available nbn technology type servicing your address), an installation appointment may be required, where a nbn co technician will install the equipment inside your home, or join the connection from outside your home to the nbn.

Once nbn co completes the installation of the nbn connection box and your modem is set up, we can then get your Belong service activated.

Regardless of which service provider you choose for your nbn service, you will still need an appointment with nbn co to install a nbn connection box (if you don’t already have one installed), prior to setting up your nbn service.

Prior to your nbn co appointment, you should have a think about where you would like your nbn Connection Box installed. Some of the things you should consider when selecting a location include:

  • Ensure there is a free power point within 3 metres of where the nbn Connection Box will be installed. If you don’t have a power point where you want the nbn connection installed, you’ll need to get a licenced electrician to install one for you.

  • Ensure the nbn Connection Box is installed as close as possible to where the modem will be in your home. Somewhere central in your home will help ensure you have good even wi-fi coverage/

  • Ensure you’ve considered the light that the nbn Connection Box emits e.g. it may not be a good idea to install it in a bedroom, home theatre room or any other room that you'd like to have dark on occasion.

  • Ensure the nbn Connection Box is not installed outside your property, in the garage, in a wet area or in a hard-to-reach location.

Do I need to be home for my nbn appointment?

If we have let you know a nbn appointment is required, we’ll let you know if you need to be home and the appointment time (this is provided as a 4-hour window such as 8am-12pm, 1pm-5pm). This is when the technician will arrive – any time between the hours your appointment is booked for.

Either you or a person 18 years or older (who is authorised to act on your behalf), must be home during the installation appointment.

What happens during the nbn installation process?

The installation process is slightly different depending on the nbn technology type that services your address (Tip: You can find the technology type we’re connecting you on in your order notifications that we email to you). Below is a summary of what you can expect relevant to the technology type you’ll be on.

If your Technology type is Fibre to the Basement (FTTB)

The nbn technician will check some equipment in the communication room as well as inside your home to test wiring and wall sockets.

No nbn connection box is required for this technology type (just your compatible modem). Please make sure the technician has access to the building’s communication room/cupboard on the day. You may need to organise this with the building manager.

If your Technology type is Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

The nbn technician may work in and outside your home. They might need to install a small box on the outside wall of your home and complete some wiring or need access to a wall socket inside your home.

No nbn connection box is required for this technology type (just your compatible modem)

If your Technology type is Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)

The nbn technician will work in and outside your home to install equipment including a small box on the outside wall, as well as wiring, a wall socket and a nbn connection box inside your home.

If your Technology type is Fibre to the Premise (FTTP)

The nbn technician will work in and outside your home to install equipment including a small box on the outside wall, as well as wiring, and a nbn connection box inside your home.

Other things you need to know

If you live in an apartment building, make sure you have full access to the communication room with your building manager on the day of the appointment.

If you’re renting, you’ll need to get permission from your landlord or real estate agent to install the nbn. The technician may need to see the permission email or letter, or you can arrange a call for a verbal permission.

If you have a body corporate, you’ll need to get permission from the body corporate to install the nbn. The technician may need to see the permission email or letter, or you can arrange a call for a verbal permission.

What happens after the appointment?

Once your appointment is completed by the nbn technician, it can take up to 24 hours to register in our systems. In most instances, your service will work straight away, and you can plug in your modem or router. You’ll know when you’re connected because the internet service light on your modem will go solid green, we will also send you an SMS within three business days to let you know your service is active.

Do I need to pay for installing nbn?

If you live in a new estate, e.g., apartment/unit/house in a new development area, you may need to pay the $300 nbn co new development charge for newly constructed buildings or dwellings. This charge is determined and passed through from nbn co and onto you as a customer.

We will inform you during your order if a new development charge applies, with the option to pay the amount as a lump-sum, or over a 12 month period. You must accept this charge to progress with your order.
